🐋 Whale Season in Vava’u
Each year, humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of Vava'u, Tonga to mate, give birth, and raise their calves.
Whale season in Vava’u runs from 1 July through October, with peak encounters typically occurring from mid-July through mid-October.

Whale watching tours operate in small groups and space is limited. We strongly recommend booking tours, flights and accommodation early for peak months.
📍 Where is Vava’u?
Vava'u, Tonga is in the middle of the tropical South Pacific, at 17.4 degrees South from the equator, about 400 nm east of Fiji and 1200 nm north of New Zealand.
Vava’u is the stunning northern island group in Tonga, known for its turquoise lagoons, dramatic cliffs, coral gardens, fantastic visibility, consistent trade winds, and calm protected waters.
The main town is Neiafu, a relaxed harbor village and the hub for whale swim tours, sailing, SCUBA, and island life.

✈️ How to Get to Vava’u, Tonga
Getting to Vava’u is part of the adventure, and it’s easier than most people expect.
Step 1: Check Fiji Airways flights directly to Vava'u (VAV), with a plane change in Nadi, Fiji (NAN) from:
North America: LAX/SFO/DFW/HON/YVR
Australia: BNE/SYD/MEL
New Zealand: AKL
Asia: SIN/HKG//NRT
Connect in NAN for a 2.5 hour flight to VAV, flying 5 to 6 days per week during the whale watching season.
Step 2: Check Fiji Airways to Tonga's southern capitol, Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu (TBU) and then check for a 50-minute domestic flight on Lulutai Airlines from TBU to VAV.
Step 3: Check Air New Zealand for flights from AKL to TBU and then a Lulutai Airlines domestic flight from TBU to VAV.

Flights directly to VAV via NAN usually fly 5-days a week during the whale watching season.

Flights into TBU fly 6-days a week.

Flights from TBU to VAV fly 6-days a week.
Sundays are a quiet day of relaxation in Tonga. There are no flights or tours operating that day. There may be a resort with a beach to relax at and perhaps a town restaurant open in the evening, but there’s not much else going on.

🎒 What to Pack for Your Whale Swim Tour
To stay comfortable on the water, here are a few essentials we recommend bringing:

🌊 Swimming Requirements & Safety
Swimming with whales is an incredible experience, but it does require basic water confidence.
All guests must:

Be able to swim independently

Feel comfortable in open ocean conditions

Be able to climb a ladder back onto the boat
For safety and ethical interaction, swims are always guided and conducted in small groups.
At Explore Vava’u:

🐋 What to Expect on the Day
A whale swim day with Explore Vava’u is relaxed, exciting, and truly unforgettable.
A typical tour includes:
Morning Departure
We depart from Fangafoa Marina on the Fungamisi Waterfront in Neiafu at 7 AM, cruising through the stunning islands of Vava’u.
Whale Searching & Encounters
Our experienced crew searches for Humpbacks in their natural sanctuary. When conditions allow, guests slip gently into the water in small guided groups of 4 guests for respectful in-water encounters.
An Ocean Adventure
Each day is different — and that’s part of the magic. Encounters depend on whale behavior, weather, and sea conditions.
Optional Snorkeling Stops
After a full day of whale watching, if time and conditions allow, the skipper may elect to finish the day exploring the Coral Gardens, Swallow's Cave, or Mariner's Cave before returning to port.
Afternoon Return
We return to the Fangafoa Marina on the Fungamisi Waterfront in Neiafu, usually between 1 PM - 3 PM, after a fun day out on the water.

🛂Do I Need A Visa For Tonga?
For most travelers planning a holiday vacation to the Kingdom of Tonga, advance visa arrangements are not required. Visitors from many countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, most European Union/Schengen nations and many Pacific Island countries are issued a free visitor visa on arrival that allows stays of about 30-days, extendable up to approximately 6-months for tourism, provided they have a passport valid for at least 6-months, a return or onward ticket, and can show accommodation details at immigration.
Travelers from countries not on the visa-exempt list must apply for an Entry Permit visa before arrival through a Tongan diplomatic mission or the Tonga Immigration Division.
At this current time, applications must include a copy of your passport, flight arrival details, flight departure details, proof of sufficient funds, and fee payment.
